Carnivals
Carnivals Overview
There are typically two carnivals held in each term of the swim season. Three are inter-club carnivals and one is our internal Club Captains Carnival.
Dates will be added to the Season Calendar once confirmed. A few weeks prior, the Carnival Convenor will seek expressions of interest (RSVPs) via the Upcoming Meets and Carnivals page.
Carnival Schedule
All carnivals are held on Saturday afternoons. Indicative timing:
- Principals Cup with Rochedale and Marshall Road — late Oct or early Nov (Term 4)
- Southside Friendly with Wellers Hill and Mansfield — late Nov or early Dec (Term 4)
- Wishart & Coorparoo Carnival — February (Term 1)
- Captains Carnival — March (Term 1)
How selection works
- Two swimmers are selected for each stroke and age group (boys and girls), plus relay teams.
- To maximise participation, swimmers may be asked to “swim up” in an older age group.
- Girls may be selected to race in mixed (boys) events to ensure all lanes are filled and all swimmers have opportunities to race.
- Selections are made by the Carnival Convenor and Nominator based on availability, age, and previous results.
How Races Work
Races are held for each age group and stroke, along with medley and freestyle relays for the following groups: 9 & under, 10–12, and 13 & over. Each club is allocated two lanes per race.
- Each event includes a girls race and a mixed race (typically for boys, though girls may swim in this race).
- Races are 25m for 9 & under, 50m for 10 & over, and 100m or 200m for relays.
- Age is determined by the swimmer’s age on the day of the carnival.
When nominating, please list all children who intend to swim. The club will allocate swimmers to events to give everyone as many races as possible. In some cases, 25m swimmers may be placed in 50m races if needed to fill events, though this is generally limited to swimmers already confident at that distance.
When submitting an RSVP
Please use the Notes section when RSVPing to answer these five questions:
- Is your child happy to swim above their age group if needed?
- What strokes is your child comfortable swimming?
- Would you like to take part in the parents’ event?
- Can you assist on the day (e.g. marshalling, timekeeping, setup)?
- Can you provide items for the bake sale (see jobs sign-up sheet)?
Volunteering
Away Carnivals: Each club provides volunteers for marshalling and timekeeping duties.
Home Carnivals: Additional help is needed for set-up, canteen, BBQ, and other event-day roles. Please sign up via the job list on the carnival event page. A bake sale is also held, and baked goods are always welcome.
Additional Information
Inter-club carnivals hosted at Camp Hill use two timekeepers per lane unless government health restrictions require otherwise.
Camp Hill Pool Records can only be set at home carnivals. For a record to be established or broken, the swimmer must be timed by two independent watches reading in hundredths of a second.
Uniform & Caps
Club swim caps MUST be worn when representing Camp Hill Amateur Swim Club at inter-club carnivals. We encourage swimmers to wear Club swimmers, Club swim cap and Club cap. See the Merchandise page for items and purchasing.
