Club Championships

Club Age Championships are split into two days of competition:

  • Individual Medley Night.
  • Age Stroke Championships.

At the end of the season the Club Age Champion Trophies will be based on the combined point results from both the Individual Medley and Age Stroke Championships. These points are outlined in the table at the bottom of the page. To be Club Age Champion a swimmer must have swum all four strokes at Age Stroke Championships and met the eligibility criteria listed below.

Ages for Championship Events will be determined by the age the swimmer turns in the calendar year and a Birth Certificate may be called for by the Committee at any time.

To be eligible for Age Championship points at the Club Championships:

  1. Swimmers are required to have their registration financially up to date;
  2. Full season members to have attended 8 or more Club Nights;
  3. Half season members to have attended 4 or more Club Nights.

To encourage participation, swimmers who have not met the eligibility criteria for Age Championship points will still be allowed to race at Age Championships. However, they will not receive placing points or medals and not be eligible for Age Champion.

If sickness or other reasons impact the ability for a swimmer to attend the required Club Nights, a doctor’s certificate or any other extenuating circumstances (in writing), acceptable to the Executive, will be accepted from Club members once only throughout the whole season. This must be provided within one week of the illness to be accepted. No points will be given for that Club Night but it will count towards Club Night attendance for qualification purposes.

A member involved in representative school swim meets on Club Night will be allowed to claim a maximum of four Club Night attendances toward qualifying for Club Age Championships. The Nominator must be advised in writing prior to the dates of the absence. Failure to advise will mean the forfeiting of those swims toward Championship Qualifying. No points will be awarded for these swims.


Individual Medley Night

To be eligible, swimmers must have been able to successfully complete one of the four Special Event Individual Medley races held on a Club Night during the season. This is to ensure all participants can complete the distance and for younger swimmers allow them to trial and gain confidence over the distance.

  • Children 11 years and under swim the 100 metre Individual Medley.
  • Swimmers 12 years and over swim the 200 metre Individual Medley.

25 metre freestyle and 25 metre breaststroke races will be held for non-medley swimmers.

Points will be awarded according to placing and will go towards the Age Champion Trophy for each age group.

If there are more than 6 swimmers in an age group, placing will be decided by time.

At Individual Medley Night two timekeepers will be used on each lane unless government health restrictions require otherwise.

Order of the strokes for the Individual Medley:

  1. Butterfly
  2. Backstroke
  3. Breaststroke
  4. Freestyle

Age Stroke Championships

For a swimmer to participate in the Age Championships, they must be able to swim the stroke using the correct technique. This is a Championship event where medals are awarded.

Age Championship events will be held in all strokes according to the following age brackets: 6 & under, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18+.

25 metre Age Championship events will be held for children 9 years and under in all four strokes. Events for children 10 years and over will be 50 metres.

Only swimmers who have met the eligibility criteria for Age Championship points will receive points or medals. Points will be awarded according to placing and will go towards the Age Champion Trophy for each age group.

If there are more than 6 swimmers in an age group, placing will be decided by time.

At Club Championships two timekeepers will be used on each lane unless government health restrictions require otherwise.

Club Age Championship Records can only be set at Club Championships. For a record to be established or broken, the swimmer must be timed by two independent watches reading in hundreths of a second.

Swimmers times will be displayed, but only as a courtesy to swimmers. These times may be altered if a discrepancy occurs.

The one start rule applies in all Championship events with some leniency shown towards the novice 25 metre swimmers.
